Evaporative cooling for data centres: Q&As

Posted by Laurence Cockman on 28/01/14 11:30

At our recent CPD accredited evaporative cooling webinar, I received some interesting questions in the Q&A session at the end. I would like to share my answers, which have been edited to make them clearer.

Q: How do you deal with freezing conditions?

A: During colder periods, where freezing outside conditions would be expected, the evaporative coolers would not be used, and they would have been earlier drained down and isolated as part of a winterisation process. This means that there is no chance of any water freezing inside the unit, as it contains no water.

Freezing conditions are then dealt with by carefully mixing quantities of that cooler outside air with warmer waste air from the IT equipment, therefore providing air at desirable conditions.

Pressurisation systems webinar: Q&As

Posted by Paul Compton on 17/12/13 11:30

At Colt’s recent oversubscribed CPD accredited pressurisation webinar, we received some interesting questions in the Q&A session at the end. I’d like to share some of them. They are edited to make the questions clearer and to reduce my ramblings.

Q: Do all buildings that operate a stay put policy have to have a Class A pressurisation systems?

A: No, if you have a residential building then certainly in the UK that would normally have a stay put policy and, if you choose to have pressurisation, then it would be designed as a Class A system. In a residential building in theUKyou are permitted AOV or shaft systems instead so the fact that you have a stay put policy in a residential building doesn’t mean that you need pressurisation.

Dual ventilation in residential common corridors: an interesting solution

Posted by Paul Compton on 26/11/13 11:30

Overheating in common corridors in residential buildings has become an increasingly vexing problem, which can be addressed by using a two-shaft smoke control system for day-to-day ventilation. One of the major issues is how many floors we can ventilate concurrently while still achieving a reasonable air flow balance between floors.
